Richard M

Experience

Richard has 15+ years of coaching and development work with middle and senior management in a range of businesses and not for profit organisations. These include the NHS, the Cabinet Office, Schroeder’s Bank, SMEs and manufacturing companies. He is also a visiting lecturer at Cranfield University, teaching communication skills and business tools to Masters and PhD students. His coaching results have included an MD who was subsequently promoted to Vice President, coaching a development team in a tech start up through to the sale of the business and two joint MDs who went from knowing little about leadership to selling their business for £10m.

Expertise

Richard blends coaching skills with Lean process improvement techniques and deep insights from Transactional Analysis. His background as a General Manager means that he also has rounded business skills and understands the pressures that senior leaders operate under. Richard is an original thinker and has published 6 business books, that include unique tools, such as Affirmations for Organisations, Organisational Impact Scores and the Physis Engine. In addition, he has Recognised Teacher Status at Cranfield University, teaches leadership skills using blended learning techniques and is accredited to the ILM to teach Level 5 Coaching Certificates and Diplomas.

Coaching style

Richard gets results. He does this by working co-creatively and by keeping clients present-centred within their organisational frame of reference. He will challenge archaic thinking and attitudes and loves to share tools and skills. He likes to set up disconcerting dilemmas, spot games and discounts and will challenge people to be the age they are. He has a reputation for working with tough cases, senior leaders who are struggling and people who need deeper insight and support.

Coaching philosophy

Richard’s coaching philosophy is based on the fact that we are all Ok and can think for ourselves and can choose to make changes. Even when we feel Not Ok, we can still learn new tools and techniques to improve our self-awareness and remain thoughtful and skilful in the moment. He believes that although we can’t change the past, we can change the stories we tell now and can create new and positive stories for ourselves.

I connected with my coach on our very first call and I believe that made the whole difference for me. I wish I could dig deeper on some of my remaining issues but unfortunately all good things have to end. I will definitely recommend coaching and have been already doing it for while. It definitely changed my life.

Tim has provided some high quality coaching support to me through a time of transition both in terms of job, career and organisational changes. He is a skilled and experienced executive coach who facilitated just the right mix of reflection, future visioning, challenge, compassion and stretch. I’d strongly recommend working with him if you are going through a career or organisation transition. Fun to work with, I always left my sessions with him feeling significantly clearer and more content with my overall direction of travel and next steps.

“I selected my coach on the basis that she had a completely different approach to my structured way of thinking. Katherine challenged me and took me way out of my comfort zone – scary and uncomfortable at times but eye-opening. These coaching sessions enabled me to see things from a very different perspective, gave me the time and space to reflect on my practice and provided practical tips and approaches as to how I can develop my performance.”

Everyone learnt a lot about themselves and others. It was the first training in English that one of my mentors had done and it was really successful for him. We have all come away feeling more confident. I have been on many development programmes and I have to say it has been one of the best I have ever attended.
