Challenge

Running a garden centre is a full time week long occupation, running more than one is a big challenge.  This garden centre has been run by a family since it was started by the parents many years ago. 

The future of the garden centres now lies with the daughter of the family and her husband.  Many family companies struggle to pass the family business on and often without passing any business skills on it can be a real challenge to make the business grow.  Additionally it can be an issue that the parents do not fully let go, making it a challenge to really take on the business.

Solution

This managing director was looking for a support network that would be able to support and advise her in growing and developing the business and also look for issues and problems that.  She was also looking for ideas to take the business to a new place that would enhance customer experience and improve efficiency.

The new Managing Director joined a local CEO/MD group run by Unlimited Potential, which meets every month to discuss and share ideas about business development and personal leadership skills.  As part of this we also provided her with an executive coach to reflect on the outcomes of the CEO group and develop her own personal confidence as a leader.

Results

The group was able to give her ideas that took the business forward into places that she had not expected, by using the wisdom of crowds she was able to identify what was needed for the business and not necessarily what she wanted to do.

In her own words “I would say the biggest gain for me has been an increase in my confidence, we have grown up as a company and are achieving things that a few years ago felt like a lot more of a challenge”.  The business now has grown with a new Garden Centre which is currently on lease and will be purchased soon.  There is also a major development starting in 2017 which will enhance the North Kent centre beyond all recognition.
