Case study 3 – Operations Director flies with executive coaching

Development Requirement

  1. Obsessive attention to detail clouding strategic judgement
  2. Fire fighting approach to problem solving
  3. Poor forward planning
  4. Poor time management

"I have never seen anybody, who has worked for me; raise their game to that degree in such a short space of time."

Managing Directors' comment following 6 sessions

The Background

Our Client is a fast growing company in the air-handling sector, started approximately five years ago. The Operations Director, picked for his technical abilities, had developed to the point that he needed support and development to grow from being a manager to becoming a director.

The company felt the need to allow him to expand his mind and attitude around strategic and developmental thinking. Whilst there still remained a need to work "in the business" there was the desire for him to also work "on the business".

The Intervention

Unlimited Potential has provided an ongoing One-to-One executive coaching programme, based around the previous successful work with the Managing Director.

The programme started with discussions with the Managing Director to find out his and the company objectives, together with a view on the operation directors strengths and weaknesses. From this viewpoint, it became clear very quickly that there was an almost obsessive attention to detail and solving immediate technical problems (typical characteristics of an engineer) combined with a lack of forward planning and time-management resulting in the immediate problems becoming more immediate.

The One-to-Ones were initially based around self-awareness; the Operations Director soon became aware that he was too heavily involved in day-to-day activities on the individual projects. He was also too involved in the detail although he was unable to do anything about it. Some deep questioning and coaching around this produced an "aha" moment when he realised that he was not trapped in this forever.

The programme covered a number of areas including:-

  • He did have the inner strength to act as a Director
  • Planning would vastly improve his effectiveness of himself and others
  • Understanding and practice on how to have a difficult conversation – resulting in proper delegation and vastly improved motivation of his staff
  • Realisation that he did have the ability to fill the Managing Director role
  • Planning and controlling his own activities to create some time for strategic thinking and planning
  • Having the confidence to control and manage the continuing expanding workload.
  • How he could create balance between work and home without losing effectiveness.

Results

The business has benefited from -

  • More sales with the same number of people
  • Release of some time for the Managing Director to pursue other objectives
  • Better margins
  • Enabling the company to progress its business plan faster.

The Director has improved through -

  • More focus
  • Greater efficiency
  • Readiness to take much more responsibility
  • Being prepared to fill whatever higher role is necessary.

Unlimited Potential takes the confidentiality of its clients very seriously, the names of the company, participant and indeed what they do has been removed to protect that confidence. All the case studies are real, with ongoing programmes
