Team Climate Inventory (TMI)

A measure of work group climate

Summary

It is common to come across a team of people who are talented individuals, but fail to gel together as a group and do not deliver the level of performance expected of them. The Team Climate Inventory (TCI) is a multidimensional measure of work group climate. Intended primarily as a team development tool capable of facilitating interventions in work groups, the TCI is an easy-to-administer 44 question measure which should take each team member no longer than 15 minutes to complete. The TCI measures four factors which are shown to be predictive of effective team performance and which could most usefully benefit from positive interventions:

  • Team Vision - this consists of four sub-scales: clarity, perceived value, sharedness and attainability;
  • Participation Safety - this consists of four sub-scales: decision-making, information sharing, interaction frequency and safety;
  • Support for Innovation - this has two elements: articulated and enhanced support;
  • Task Orientation - this has three sub-scales: commitment to excellence, appraisal and task orientation.

Potential uses of the TCI include:
  • Team climate surveys for organisations as part of organisational development interventions;
  • Team climate diagnosis and development interventions;
  • Team innovation and creativity interventions to enhance innovative potential;
  • Measuring team development and changes in group climate over time;
  • Selection of new team members and their induction into the team.

The TCI is provided with normative data from both public and private sectors computer program. It can be used with any team, regardless of their level within an organisation.

Administration

The individual questionnaires take 15 minutes to complete. The team profiles are produced for feedback to the team, which is best done at a facilitated team workshop. Development activities are then introduced to improve team performance.

Unique features

A programme which gets to the heart of dysfunctional teams, identifies areas for improvement and measures ongoing change.
